iPhone 17 Family Gets RAM Upgrades and Memory Integrity Enforcement

iPhone 17 Ram upgrades Memory Integrity Enforcement

The new iPhone 17 family introduces some exciting changes to the lineup, with a new Air model replacing the Plus version and the base iPhone 17 getting a ProMotion display and 256GB of storage. With the launch of Apple Intelligence last year, Apple increased the RAM to 8GB in all iPhone 16 models, but the iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max now come with even more RAM.

This isn’t something that Apple publicly disclosed yesterday, but MacRumors discovered in Xcode 26, the latest version of Apple’s developer tool, that the iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max now offer 12GB of RAM. This only leaves the iPhone 17 with just 8GB of RAM, but this should still be more than enough for most use cases.

What Apple talked about yesterday, however, is the introduction of Memory Integrity Enforcement on its latest iPhones. This new security feature will better protect users from consumer malware as well as mercenary spyware. The always-on safety protection is comparable to the memory integrity feature Microsoft also introduced on Windows PCs.

“Memory Integrity Enforcement is built on the robust foundation provided by our secure memory allocators, coupled with Enhanced Memory Tagging Extension (EMTE) in synchronous mode, and supported by extensive Tag Confidentiality Enforcement policies,” Apple said today. “MIE is built right into Apple hardware and software in all models of iPhone 17 and iPhone Air and offers unparalleled, always-on memory safety protection for our key attack surfaces including the kernel, while maintaining the power and performance that users expect.”

Apple often likes to tout security for marketing purposes, but Memory Integrity Enforcement certainly looks like an important step towards protecting users from security exploits. You can learn more about how the feature works on the company’s Security Research blog.
