Amazon Prime Video Adds AI-Generated Video Recaps

Amazon Prime Video AI Generated Recaps

Amazon is introducing AI-generated video recaps for select TV shows on its Prime Video service. The first supported shows include Fallout, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, Upload, Bosch, and The Rig, but Video Recaps are currently only available in English and exclusively on living room devices.

You may remember that Prime Video previously added X-Ray Recaps, which also use AI to provide a spoiler-free recap of a TV show episode or season. However, X-Ray recaps are in textual form, while video recaps include narration, dialogue, and music.

“With the help of generative AI, the Video Recaps feature analyzes a season’s key plot points and character arcs to deeply understand the most pivotal moments that will resonate with viewers as they enter the next season. Then, the AI finds the most compelling video clips and pairs them with audio effects, dialogue snippets, and music. These are all stitched together with an overarching AI-generated voiceover narration to deliver a theatrical-quality visual recap,” Amazon explained today.

While many TV shows already include recaps at the beginning of a new episode, generative AI technology could soon make that work superfluous for TV producers. For now, Video Recaps will only be available at the beginning of a new season for supported shows, and they will coexist alongside text-based X-Ray Recaps. The latter can also summarize key cliffhangers and other pieces of an episode, and they’re available from the Prime Video detail page and the X-Ray experience that can be activated during playback.
