Apple is reportedly working on its own game controllers for iPhones that will compete with existing models from Razer, Backbone, and other companies. Following a report from MacDailyNews revealing traces of first-party game controllers in a macOS 26.7 beta, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman confirmed that Apple currently has two game controllers in development.

“The company has indeed been working on gaming controllers for the iPhone for a bit over a year, with the goal of competing with a slew of popular third-party options. Apple sees this as a growing market and wants in,” Gurman wrote.

The reporter added that Beats executives are currently overseeing the project, and this suggests that Apple may sell these first iPhone game controllers under the Beats brand. After acquiring the company back in 2014, Apple has continued to release Beats products Beats-branded headphones, earbuds, speakers, charging cables, and iPhone cases, and Gurman believes that Apple may see the lifestyle brand as a better fit for the gaming accessories.

Even though Apple has over 200,000 games on its App Store according to Similarweb, most of them are casual games optimized for touch input. Thanks to Apple’s powerful A-series chips, there’s a lot of potential for AAA games on iPhones, and we recently saw blockbuster titles such as Resident Evil 4 Remake or Assassin’s Creed Mirage launch on the App Store. By launching its own game controllers, Apple could show game developers that it’s about to take gaming more seriously.
