Adobe Photoshop Adds New Image Generation Features in Beta

Adobe Photoshop Image Generation Firefly 3

Adobe has announced today a beta version of Photoshop with new image generation capabilities powered by the company’s Firefly Image 3 model. The latter is also available in beta the standalone Firefly web application, as well as in Adobe InDesign.

“Firefly has been used to generate over 7 billion images worldwide since its initial debut in March 2023,” the company said today. “Adobe built it for direct integration into workflows Adobe customers use every day, including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Express, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Substance 3D and now Adobe InDesign.”

In the new beta version of Photoshop, the latest Firefly Image 3 Model lets users generate images from a simple text prompt, similar to other generative AI tools like Microsoft Designer and OpenAI’s DALL·E. The new AI model also improves the existing Generative Fill experience with Generative Expand, which lets users expand and change the aspect ratio of images.

Adobe has trained its latest Firefly model on licensed content such as Adobe Stock. “It was designed to generate content for commercial use that does not infringe on copyright and other intellectual property (IP) right such as trademarks and logos,” the company emphasized today. That could be a selling point for customers worried about the possible risks of copyright infringements with content created from generative AI tools.

If you don’t pay for Photoshop, you can try to generate images with the Firefly web app, which provides 25 free generative credits per month. For $4.99/month, the Premium plan lets users enjoy 100 monthly generative credits and removes the watermarks on images generated by Firefly.
