Starting tomorrow, Adobe Acrobat customers can use generative AI to create and edit images in PDF documents using text prompts. Adobe is also improving the AI Assistant in Acrobat with enhanced meeting transcripts and support for asking questions, learning more, and creating content in other document types.
“From Edit and Share to Protect and Export, Adobe has consistently innovated PDF, transforming it from a static page into a collaborative workspace,” Adobe senior vice president Abhigyan Modi said. “With generative AI, we can advance the category again with image creation and insights across a new range of document types, empowering every customer with a deeper understanding and ability to transform information into compelling content – with the ease and speed of a simple prompt.”

Adobe is billing the generative AI capabilities in Acrobat as a first for any PDF solution. As with many AI features, the idea here is that you can stay in the context of your work as you use them, without needing to use a different app or website or seek out others with specific expertise.
Acrobat’s Firefly-based capabilities include Edit Image, which lets you use features like Generative Fill, Remove Background, Erase, and Crop to add, remove, and update images in PDF files, and Generative Image, which lets you add new images to PDFs using Adobe’s Firefly Image 3 Model.
Acrobat’s in-app Adobe AI Assistant is also gaining new capabilities like Insights for other document types–Microsoft Word and PowerPoint–and enhanced meeting transcripts with generative summaries. The AI Assistant capabilities are a paid add-on for free Reader or paid Acrobat customers at $4.99 per month and up, though Adobe is offering free access from June 18 through June 28.
