Microsoft today announced Bing Video Creator, an OpenAI Sora-powered tool for transforming text prompts into short videos.
“Powered by Sora, Bing Video Creator transforms your text prompts into short videos,” the Microsoft Bing team announced. “Just describe what you want to see and watch your vision come to life.”
OpenAI announced its Sora text-to-video AI model in February 2024 and then finally took it out of preview that December before bringing it to the EU and UK in February 2025. But Sora requires a ChatGPT Plus ($20 per month) or Pro ($200 per month) subscription, while Bing Video Creator is free for all to use. Assuming, that is, you don’t mind using your phone, as it’s only available on the Bing mobile app for Android and iPhone. And don’t mind creating phone-style vertical (9:16 aspect ratio) videos, though support for horizontal (16:9) videos is coming soon.
OK, there are a few more limitations. Where Sora can create videos up to 60 seconds in length, Bing Video Creator is limited to 5-second clips, and each user can only make 10 creations at Fast speed per month; further videos will be made at Standard speed, or you can spend 100 Microsoft Rewards points to make one video at Fast speed.
To get started, install Bing on your phone–it’s OK, no one else was using it either–run it, tap the menu (grid) button in the lower right, and then choose the “Video Creator” icon under All apps. Then, just type a description of the video you would like to make.
I have to say, the quality is impressive. Even more impressive, Microsoft may have finally figured out a way to convince people to use the Bing app. But if not, here’s some more good news:Bing Video Creator is coming soon to the (desktop) web-based version of Bing and Copilot Search as well. When that’s available, you’ll be able to access it at Bing.com/create.
