AI startup Perplexity is expanding access to Comet, the AI web browser it made available in July with its $200/month Perplexity Max subscription. Comet is now free to use for everyone, but it will have some usage limits.
Comet can summarize web pages, organize tabs by category, compare information across multiple tabs, and more with the Comet Assistant that’s available via a collapsible sidebar. Comet users can also interact with the browser with their voice.
The web browser uses Perplexity’s own search engine, which works more like an answer engine that provides detailed responses while allowing users to navigate the web to check sources. Perplexity says that Comet’s search engine does not send personal data to Perplexity until a personal search that involves the currently opened tab and relevant browsing history is requested to the browser.
Comet also integrates the Comet Agent, which can perform certain web tasks on its own, including scheduling meetings, making purchases, and filling out forms. While Comet may collect browsing data to perform these agentic actions, users have the option to delete this data at any time in the browser’s settings.
“So far, Comet has been desktop-only. A mobile app is easy to build, while a mobile AI assistant and powerful curiosity accelerator takes careful thought. Soon, the Comet mobile app will be available on any device, with a personal AI designed for your phone,” the company said today.
You can now download Comet for Windows and macOS at perplexity.ai/comet. Perplexity Pro subscribers will continue to enjoy access to more features beyond Comet, including a new Email Assistant and other Background Assistants with agentic capabilities.
