ChatGPT Now Supports Group Chats in Select Markets

ChatGPT group chats

OpenAI has started testing a new group chat feature in ChatGPT that lets multiple users collaborate in the same conversation. Group chats are separate from private conversations with ChatGPT, but every user in the group can ask questions to the chatbot, upload images and files, request it to organize information, and more.

“Group chats work much like your usual ChatGPT conversations — only now, others can join in,” OpenAI explained. “We’ve also taught ChatGPT new social behaviors for group chats. It follows the flow of the conversation and decides when to respond and when to stay quiet based on the context of the group conversation. You can always mention ‘ChatGPT’ in a message when you want it to respond.”

Group chats in ChatGPT are now rolling out to mobile and web users in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan. Users can start a group chat by tapping the people icon in the top right corner of any chat, which will create a separate conversation where users’ personal ChatGPT memory is automatically disabled. Group members can use a share link to invite up to 20 participants to a chat, and rate limits are individualized.

“Group chats are just the beginning of ChatGPT becoming a shared space to collaborate and interact with others,” OpenAI said today. Participants in a group chat are required to create a profile with their name, username, and photo, and group chat managers can also customize the tone and length of ChatGPT in each group chat. The chatbot will also automatically enable safeguards when a user under 18 joins a group chat.

Microsoft recently announced a similar groups feature for its Copilot chatbot, which lets up to 32 people collaborate in the conversation in real time. However, Copilot groups are currently only available in the US.
