OpenAI is reportedly working on a new desktop “superapp” that will combine ChatGPT, its Codex coding platform, and Atlas web browser. According to the Wall Street Journal, the new app will offer agentic AI capabilities, and it may also help the company to streamline its resources.
“We realized we were spreading our efforts across too many apps and stacks, and that we need to simplify our efforts,” said OpenAI’s Chief of Applications Fidji Simo, in an internal note with employees seen by the WSJ. “That fragmentation has been slowing us down and making it harder to hit the quality bar we want.”
The report says that OpenAI President Greg Brockman will temporarily be responsible for the development of the new unified app, which should also lead to some organizational changes. The new effort comes at a time when OpenAI is facing increased competition from other AI startups like Anthropic and Perplexity. It’s also easy to see apps like Sora, which was OpenAI’s first attempt at competing with social apps like TikTok, as unnecessary distractions.
So far, OpenAI has always prioritized macOS to launch new desktop apps, and its ChatGPT Atlas browser is still not available on Windows. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the company’s new “superapp” also launch first on macOS. However, it remains to be seen if OpenAI can succeed in combining a web browser, a coding platform, and an answer engine into a single app with agentic AI features that doesn’t look like a bloated mess.
