Report: Apple’s Revamped Siri Will Support Auto-Deleting Chats

Apple is expected to launch a standalone Siri app on the upcoming ’27 versions of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, and one of its distinctive features may be a privacy-first design. In his latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple will make privacy “a centerpiece of its presentation” at its upcoming WWDC conference, with the revamped Siri having the built-in ability to auto-delete chat conversations.

The company may make Siri chats auto-delete by default while offering options to keep conversations for 30 days, one year, or forever. This would match existing options in Apple’s Messages app. Other chatbots like ChatGPT and Google Gemini also offer “temporary chats” that don’t appear in the history and also aren’t used for personalization and model training, but Apple will reportedly go even further.

According to Gurman, Apple is “likely to argue that its approach is fundamentally different from rivals that broadly train models on user interactions and cloud-stored histories.” The reporter added that the company “will place tighter limits around how memory works, including restrictions on what information can persist and how long it can be retained.”

Apple may also emphasize that its revamped Siri offers a completely ad-free experience at a time when competitors like ChatGPT now show ads to Free and Go users in the US. While Google has yet to introduce ads into its Gemini chatbot, it seems open to the idea. Philipp Schindler, the company’s Chief Business Officer, said during the company’s latest earnings call that “if done well, ads can be really valuable.”

While Apple’s revamped Siri will use Google’s AI models under the hood, Gurman previously reported that the company may allow third-party models to power Apple Intelligence features on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. The reporter expects the new Siri to launch with a “beta” tag, just like the original version of Siri that debuted on the iPhone 4S 15 years ago.

“Test versions of iOS 27 within Apple use this label for the new Siri and include a toggle to leave the Siri beta,” Gurman explained. Amazon currently allows Alexa+ testers to go back to the original version of Alexa, and it will be interesting to see if Apple also offers this option on the public version of iOS 27, which is expected to be released in September.
