OpenAI is getting ready to roll out ads to ChatGPT users in 31 European countries next week. This will be the largest expansion of ChatGPT’s global ads platform to date, following an initial launch in the US and eight additional markets earlier this year.
The list of European countries about to get ads in ChatGPT includes Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Austria. “Ads help advance our mission to democratize access to the best AI by supporting free and low-cost access to ChatGPT,” OpenAI said in the announcement.
At the moment, OpenAI is only showing ads to ChatGPT Free and Go users. “Ads in ChatGPT are always clearly labeled and separate from ChatGPT’s answers, and advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides. People also have control over ad personalization, with ad-free paid plans available for those who prefer not to see ads,” the company explained.
ChatGPT recently surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, and OpenAI, which is still far from profitable, needs to start monetizing its massive user base. Google, which also now has over 1 billion Gemini users, has also started showing ads in Google Search’s AI Mode. Even Google’s traditional search results page now displays a new type of Gemini-powered ads.
