Google Gemini has been on a tear for the past several months, and this week it’s getting one of its biggest functional upgrades yet, with an interactive space for refining documents and code called Canvas and a NotebookLM-like Audio Overview feature.
“Gemini can already help you brainstorm ideas, do deep research and generate content for whatever project you’re working on,” Google senior director Dave Citron writes. “And starting today, Gemini can offer even more help, whether it’s editing a document with you in real time or taking your idea and coding a real prototype.”
Here’s what’s new.
Canvas. As with similar features in other AI chatbots, Canvas is an interactive space for creating, refining, and sharing document- and coding-based work. It’s available as a new button in the Gemini prompt bar and lets you collaborate on projects with Gemini and then share them to Google Docs to collaborate with other people. This feature is rolling out globally today for Gemini and Gemini Advanced subscribers in all languages in which Gemini Apps is available. You can learn more on the Gemini website.
Audio Overview. Based on NotebookLM, Audio Overview turns your documents, slides, and Deep Research reports into engaging, podcast-style audio discussions with two AI hosts. “They’ll summarize the material, draw connections between topics, engage in a dynamic back-and-forth and provide unique perspectives,” Google says. Audio Overview is starting to roll out today to Gemini and Gemini Advanced subscribers globally in English, with more languages coming soon.
