Google loves Drops. There are Pixel Drops. Android Drops*. Even Workspace Drops. And now, there are Gemini Drops too. Well, sort of.
“Gemini is constantly evolving, but Gemini Drops makes it easier to keep up with what’s being released,” the new Gemini Drops Hub site explains. “Check here regularly to find feature announcements, product tips, and see how our community is using Gemini to create, research, and do more.”
I wish I could tell you that Drops are a regularly scheduled thing, but that’s not the case. As with Windows 11, which went from “Windows as a Service” to “Continuous innovation” to what I think of as “at Microsoft’s whim,” Google can issue Drops on whatever cadence it wishes. Pixel Drops are generally issued quarterly, unless they aren’t. (*Android Drops aren’t really called Drops, but Android is updated with new batches called Quarterly Platform Releases, or QPRs, and come on, you know it’s getting renamed any second now.)
Workspace Drops are new to me, but here’s one from today. It’s called the June Feature Drop, which suggests a monthly release schedule.
And then there’s Gemini.
Gemini is a problem because Gemini is AI and AI is updated … forever. Always. At any time, literally. It’s also mostly a cloud service, so the notion of Drops is a bit fanciful. Google just adds new features all the time. In fact, if I’m reading this right, the term Gemini Drops may literally just refer to a communication on Google’s part to explain recent new features. Indeed, this Google blog post says that Gemini Drops is just a new monthly showcase of what’s new in Gemini. And given all the churn, this feels somewhat necessary.
Anyway, what’s new in Gemini this month is:
So there you go. Compared to the chaos we see in Windows 11, that almost feels manageable. Almost.
