Made by Google 2025: Gemini is Coming to Google Home

Somewhat lost in today’s flurry of Pixel news across hardware, software, and services, Google also said that it’s bringing Gemini to Google Home, its smart home platform. Which is obvious on one level, but also curious because Google has largely ignored Google Home in recent years, especially its in-house smart speakers and screens.

“Google Assistant pioneered the role of a helpful voice in the home, [and] now, we’re introducing an all-new voice assistant for the next generation of help at home: Gemini for Home,” Google Home & Nest chief product officer Anish Kattukaran writes. “Gemini for Home is built on Google’s most advanced AI models, with unique capabilities designed for the home. It offers reliable, hands-free help and can manage complex tasks across all of your home devices, assisting every member of your household, as well as visitors and guests.”

Details on Gemini Home are light, but Google says that it will have more natural conversations, interact with your streaming platforms, let you control smart home devices with your voice, help you create calendars, lists, and timers using natural language interactions, and otherwise use Gemini to answer questions as you would on any device. Gemini Home will also include the Gemini Live feature for ongoing conversations with the AI.

Gemini Home won’t arrive until early October, and even then, it will be an early preview. But Google says that it will replace Google Assistant with Google Home on existing smart speakers and screens. So perhaps we’ll see new first-party hardware soon, too: The most recent Google smart screen, the Nest Hub 2, dates back to early 2021, and its most recent smart speaker, the Nest Audio, is even older, having been released in late 2020.
