Amazon Announces New Premium Echo Studio Speaker

Amazon is announcing a lot of new products and features for Alexa today. The company is introducing new hardware under the Echo brand, but the main headliner here is the Echo Studio.

It’s a new, premium speaker from Amazon that includes 3D audio and Dolby Atmos support. Amazon says it’s the “most innovative” speaker the company has ever built. Design-wise, it just looks like a wider version of the regular Echo, and a lot similar to Apple’s HomePod.

It’s able to tune the audio around your room automatically, and it’s meant to sound like a high-end, premium speaker, thanks to the three speakers inside the device, with a directional tweeter in front, and a 5.25-inch bass driver on the bottom.

“Echo Studio is the most innovative speaker we’ve ever built. It produces unbelievable sound, with space, clarity, and depth. All you have to do is plug it in and the built-in Alexa microphones will automatically calibrate and model the room around you. And you’re ready to go. It works great with the music you’re already streaming today, but works even better with new 3D formats. It’s bold, incredible sound in a simple package,” Amazon said.

In other words, the sound on this thing is supposed to sound really good, and Amazon is working with partners like Sony, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group to bring more tracks that actually support 3D audio. Oh, you can also connect the Echo Studio to 4K Fire TV devices, so all the Dolby Atmos-encoded content will sound great on the Echo studio.

The Echo Studio will cost $199, and pre-orders are open today.

<p>Any word on whether you can link 2 or more of these speakers together? To me, this is crying out to be a 2-speaker Atmos-enabled home theater. (Imagine 1 on each side of the couch, with the 3D audio tech to create dialogue in front and surround sound everywhere else.)</p>
