Ralf Groene, the former head of Microsoft’s Windows and Devices design team has joined Amazon this week to lead design for the company’s devices and services (via The Verge). Groene announced back in April 2024 that was retiring from Microsoft after 17 years at the company, but he’s now the latest high-profile Microsoft veteran to join Amazon in recent months.
You may remember that Panos Panay, Microsoft’s former Chief Product Officer became Amazon’s new Senior Vice President of Devices and Services back in October 2023 (https://www.thurrott.com/amazon/289895/panos-panay-becomes-amazons-new-devices-services-leader). Panay and Groene have worked together on Surface devices for years, and will be interesting to see the impact of these talented designers on Amazon’s products.
Amazon mostly designs cheap hardware these days, so Panay and Groene may have higher design constraints compared to what they had while they were working on Microsoft’s premium Surface devices. However, we’ve already seen Amazon releasing some eye-catching new products in recent months, including the first First Color Kindle and the premium-looking Fire TV Omni Mini-LED Series.
The group of Microsoft veterans who recently joined Amazon also includes former Xbox leader J Allard, who’s now Vice President of Product reporting directly to Panay. Aidan Marcuss, formerly CVP of Windows and Windows Cloud also joined Amazon this week as Vice President of Fire TV, Advertising, and App Store.
