Amazon is about to cut access to the Kindle Store on Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 and earlier. In an email to The Verge, the company explained that these devices will “no longer be able to purchase, borrow, or download new content via the Kindle Store” starting on May 20, 2026.
The company will notify affected customers by email before they lose access to the Kindle Store next month. While books already downloaded on affected Kindle e-readers will remain available to read, users won’t be able to re-download them if they factory reset their devices or deregister them. On Kindle Fire devices, however, other apps and services will remain accessible after the Kindle Store shuts down on May 20.

According to The Verge, Amazon will offer a 20% percent discount on new Kindle devices to customers affected by the Kindle Store closure. Moreover, the company will give these customers a $20 ebook credit once they upgrade, and this limited-time offer will be available until June 20, 2026.
