Apple Reportedly Planning Refreshed iPad Pro, Apple Watch 5, AirPods 3, and HomePod Mini

Apple has a plethora of hardware coming up for its fans. Along with the new iPhone 11 Pro, Apple is working on a bunch of new hardware for this year and the next year. Bloomberg reported Apple’s plans for its upcoming hardware on Thursday.

Apple is reportedly working on a refreshed iPad Pro. The company will launch a new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro this year with upgraded cameras similar to the upcoming iPhones. Apple is putting three cameras on the new iPhones, with upgraded video recording capabilities, which could make its way to the iPad Pro as well. The new iPad Pro will feature faster processors and an identical design to the current generation of iPad Pros as well. Elsewhere, Apple is upgrading the low-end iPad for schools with a 10.2-inch screen, getting rid of the traditional 9.7-inch panel.

The company is also working on a new Apple Watch revamp for this year. The new Apple Watch Series 5 will reportedly feature a new design and bigger screens, though the upgrade will be more focused on watchOS 6 software improvements. It could also come in a new titanium finish.

Bloomberg is today confirming the 16-inch MacBook Pro as well, which is expected to arrive this year. The new laptop’s bezels will be slimmer, giving it almost the same size as the current 15-inch models. The new device is also rumored to feature Apple’s new scissor-switch keyboard design, though Bloomberg isn’t saying anything about that.

For the next year, Apple is apparently working on new AirPods and HomePod. The company is working on AirPods 3 with new water resistance and noise cancellation features, and they will cost more than the current model. Cupertino is also working on a new, cheaper HomePod that will only come with two tweeters compared to the current HomePod’s seven tweeters. The device’s cheaper price could allow it to sell better than the current HomePod, which hasn’t sold well.

We will likely get to see the new iPads, Apple Watch, and the 16-inch MacBook Pro along with the new iPhone 11 Pro this September. Apple is yet to officially announce the event, though, which is expected to happen on the 10th of September.

One challenge of the HomePod that other companies don't have is that Apple's vertical purchasing is so severe that it makes the HomePod irrelevant. A Google Home or Amazon Alexa is often in the home of Apple users, who can't replace Siri on their iphone with a better search engine. But no Android user needs a HomePod for its search capabilities. It's only the very Apple brand conscious, who probably already have a dozen other ways to access Siri (iphone, ipads, apple tv, watch, airpods, macintosh, family members' devices, etc). So the Home Pod, minus the gee whiz audophile nonsense, doesn't make sense for many people.

It's kind of sad that the only major tech that comes to new iphones lately is better cameras. Face unlock was keen, but was really just an iteration on competitive tech and didn't really change much from fingerprints. Better pictures have been touted long after I care (5 years now?). At some point, you wonder if they'll have to add features back in to sell. They seem comfortable selling subscriptions to used phone users, but it's a strategy that cannibalizes itself. You can say they know what they're doing, but the premier tech company on the planet has no idea what to do with a hundred billion dollars while the world teeters on chaos. I don't think they know what they're doing.

In reply to solomonrex:

iOS has iterated and added features must faster than Android. As it stands, the iPhone is a generation ahead of the best Android has to offer when you look at the CPU and the I/O. Can you please share the major Android innovations? Most Android apps are not native. The underlying core of the OS has a lot of issues with memory management, etc.

As for Google Home, etc, these smart speakers are pretty useless and not used much outside of a few key features (asking to play music, asking for the weather, etc). Smart speakers are largely fad businesses that are not used all that much based on the analytics data.

People certainly have Echoes, but they also use them for very few functions. I really think the HomePod is just not a great idea, but I don't think the Google Home or Echo are great outside of gathering info for Google and Amazon to monetize – they are unsecure pieces of spying equipment to help them both make more money through sales or ads.

And that's what Apple can sell more of, just as they have on iPhone – more secure, more private, etc.

Again, please show me anyone in smartphones that is really innovating. Samsung has released a not ready for primetime foldable device. That's about it.
