Apple Will Make the New Mac Pro in the United States

Apple today announced that the company will be manufacturing the new Mac Pro in the US after all. Apple has been making the Mac Pro in the US since 2013, though reports claimed that the company could switch to China with the new Mac Pro to reduce costs.

Apple has now confirmed it will indeed manufacture the new Mac Pro in Austin, Texas, using the same facilities that it used to make the older Mac Pros. Apple will work with more than a dozen American companies for manufacturing the device, as well as getting components for the computer. Apple says the value of American-made components in the new Mac Pro is 2.5 times more than the previous generation Mac Pro.

Apple also revealed that it’s getting a federal product exclusion from the US government, meaning it won’t have to pay for the import tariffs on certain components needed for the Mac Pro. And that’s probably one of the reasons why the company decided to stick to the US for the manufacturing of the new Mac Pro. The company also said it’s “on track” to fulfil its promise to invest $350 billion in the US economy by 2023.

I like to see this. If they keep costs the same, great, but even if it was a bit more expensive, I'd gladly pay a little more for a Made in USA version of my electronics–or anything else.

That's good to hear. I'm hoping we can slowly build backup some manufacturing. Even if there are lots of robots we need to be building things in the US.

I'd be very curious to see if they got exemptions for duty on other Apple products made in China as part of the deal.

starting from only 5999$, that cover USA production cost, after China tax they had to move.

they're planning to manufacture also the 999$ stand in USA?

In reply to dontbeevil:

Perhaps they will. Then they could blame US manufacturing for the cost.

Assembled in the US might be a better phrase. A good portion of the electronics will still be manufactured overseas and then assembled in the US.
