iOS 16.1.2 is Out With Carrier Compatibility And Crash Detection Updates

Apple has released iOS 16.1.2 today, which is now available to download on iPhone 8 and newer models. This is a minor update that brings “improved compatibility with wireless carriers,” as well as some Crash Detection optimizations.

Crash detection is a new feature that Apple introduced on its iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models. When these iPhones detect a severe car crash, they will sound an alarm and display an alert on the screen with an Emergency Call slider. If you’re unable to respond to the notification within 20 seconds, these iPhone models will automatically contact emergency services with a looped audio message.

Apple didn’t share further details about Crash Detection in iOS 16.1.2, but the feature relies on sensor data and isn’t 100% accurate. Crash Detection is also available on the Apple Watch Series 8, the 2nd gen Apple Watch SE, and the new Apple Watch Ultra running watchOS 9.

iOS 16.1.2 is expected to be followed by a more substantial iOS 16.2 update in December. The latest public betas include Apple’s new Freeform app, an updated Home app with support for the Matter smart home standard, as well as a new Sleep widget to add on the Lock Screen.

In the meantime, you can download iOS 16.1.2 on your iPhone by going to General > Software Update in the Setting app.
