Report: Apple’s iPhone SE 4 Could Use the iPhone 14 Design

Apple iPhone 14

Apple’s next low-cost iPhone SE could catch up to recent iPhone models in a pretty big way. While the 3rd-gen model released in Spring 2022 still uses the same body as the iPhone 8 from 2017, MacRumors is reporting that the next model could look very much like last year’s iPhone 14, with some minor tweaks.

The iPhone 14 is still being sold by Apple, and it features a 6.1-inch screen with the same smaller notch that debuted on the iPhone 13. It has a dual-camera system on the back, but MacRumors believes that the iPhone SE 4 will only come with a single rear camera.

“Unlike the ‌iPhone 14‌, the ‌iPhone SE‌ 4 will feature a single 48-megapixel rear camera, developed under the codename “Portland”, with a custom backplate for the device to account for the design change. The decision to use a single-camera design lines up with all previous models of the ‌iPhone SE‌, with the flash located in a similar position as well,” the report reads.

Due to the single-camera design, the iPhone SE 4 may be slightly lighter than the iPhone 14, but the budget iPhone will still use the same aluminum frame and glass backplate. However, another difference with the iPhone 14 will be the inclusion of a USB-C port for charging, a change Apple also made on its new iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro this fall.

MacRumors also believes that the user-configurable Action button, which replaced the mute switch on the new iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max this year may also make its way to the iPhone SE 4. “Current information suggests that Apple intends to make the Action button a standard feature across the entire iPhone 16 range, with it eventually being available on the ‌iPhone SE‌ 4 as well,” the report says.

While there’s been a 2 years gap between the iPhone SE 2 (2020) and SE 3 (2022), MacRumors believes that the 4th-gen model may not be released until 2025. Yes, Apple slowly iterates, as you can tell by the iPad family receiving no new model this year. That was actually unprecedented in the 13 year history of the iPad.
