Report: OLED iPad Pros and New 12.9-inch iPad Air Are Coming in 2024

In recent years, Apple has been releasing new iPhones and Apple Watches in September, followed by new iPads and Macs in October. While we did get new M3-based Macs this fall, we reportedly won’t see new iPads until next year.

According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the company is planning to refresh its entire iPad lineup next year, starting with two new iPad Air models in the first quarter of 2024. The analyst expects to see a brand new 12.9-inch model (the same size as the biggest iPad Pro) in addition to the 10.9-inch model.

As the current iPad Air is powered by Apple’s M1 chip, the new models will likely come with last year’s M2 chip. The next 11-inch and 12.9-inch Pad Pros, however, are expected to ship with Apple’s brand new M3 chip that just made its debut in the refreshed 24-inch iMac and base 14-inch MacBook Pro.

Kuo reports these new iPad Pros will be the first models to come with OLED displays, delivering more vibrant colors and power efficiency improvements compared to the current mini-LED displays. The analyst expects a late Q1 2024-Q2 release window for these new iPad Pros, as well as a possible price bump due to the new OLED displays plus the addition of the 12.9-inch iPad Air to the lineup.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also previously reported that the next iPad Pros will ship with OLED displays, but added that Apple is also working on a new version of its Magic Keyboard with a larger trackpad. Apple’s MacBook family is also expected to transition to OLED displays at some point, but according to Gurman, that won’t happen until 2025 at the earliest.

As for entry-level iPads, Kuo’s report mentions that a new iPad Mini and an 11th-generation iPad will be released in the second half of 2024, though there are no details about their hardware. The 10th gen iPad was the first model to come with a camera located along the landscape edge, and this is something Apple should really bring to the rest of the iPad lineup for consistency.
