Report: iPad Pro to Get OLED Displays and New Magic Keyboard in 2024

Apple is reportedly planning to refresh its iPad Pro lineup in a pretty big way next year. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the next models coming in 2024 will feature Apple’s upcoming M3 chip, as well as a big screen upgrade.

“The next iPad Pro models — codenamed J717, J718, J720 and J721 — will shift to the next-generation M3 chip. They will also be Apple’s first tablets with OLED displays, the same types of screens used on the iPhone since the X model in 2017. They are crisper and brighter, and reproduce colors more accurately,” Gurman reported.

OLED screens have become quite common on high-end phones and TVs, and they usually look better to the eye thanks to their infinite blacks and absence of backlighting. It should be no surprise to see Apple bring OLED displays first to the iPad Pro lineup, as these displays are more expensive to manufacture. Gurman also reports that the biggest iPad Pro will see its display grow from 12.9 to 13 inches, while the base model will keep its smaller 11-inch screen.

According to the report, Apple is also planning to revamp its Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro. The upcoming new model is said to feature a larger trackpad, and it should also make the iPad Pro “look even more like a laptop than the current setup”. The current Magic Keyboard attaches to the iPad Pro magnetically, using what Apple describes as a “floating cantilever design” that makes the tablet slightly float above the keyboard.

Gurman said that these new M3-based iPad Pro with OLED displays won’t be officially revealed until spring or early summer 2024 and that we shouldn’t expect “anything other than minor updates to the company’s other tablets before then.” Apple’s next hardware event, which Gurman expects to be held on September 12, will see Apple reveal the iPhone 15 lineup and new Apple Watch models.
