Fortnite is coming back to iOS users in Australia following its removal from the App Store back in 2020. The game will be available from the mobile version of the Epic Games Store, which is also coming to iOS in the country after an Australian court determined that Apple harmed competition by blocking the distribution of apps outside the App Store.

“An Australian court just found that Apple and Google abuse their control over app distribution and in-app payments to limit competition. There are 2,000+ pages of findings that we’ll need to dig into to fully understand the details. This is a WIN for developers and consumers in Australia,” Epic Games said today in a post on X.

Epic Games has been fighting Apple in court since 2020, after the latter removed Fortnite from the App Store due to a new payment system that bypassed the company’s 30% cut on in-app purchases. Two months ago, Fortnite returned to the US App Store after Apple complied with a US District Court order, which required the company to allow Epic Games to communicate with its customers and offer alternative payment methods. In the EU, Epic Games had already made Fortnite available on iOS via its Epic Games Store.

In Japan, a new law similar to the EU’s Digital Markets Act also requires Apple to allow alternative app stores on iOS, opening the way for Fortnite’s comeback in the country in late 2025. Slowly but surely, Apple is being forced to open its walled garden, but the company still expressed its disappointment towards the Australian court’s ruling.

“Apple faces fierce competition in every market where we operate,” an Apple spokesperson said in a statement to Financial Review (via Gamesindustry.biz). “We continuously invest and innovate to make the App Store the safest place for users to get apps, and a great business opportunity for developers in Australia and around the world. “We welcome the court’s rejection of Epic’s demands that we distribute app stores from within the Google Play store … However, we disagree with the court’s characterisation of our billing policies and practices.”
