Gurman: Apple’s Foldable iPhone is Still Coming in September

iPhone launch Apple Store Tim Cook

Apple’s first foldable iPhone will be announced in September alongside the new iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported yesterday. A previous report from Nikkei Asia suggested a possible delay due to engineering development challenges, but Gurman’s sources told a different story.

“While the complexity of the new display and materials may limit initial supply for several weeks, Apple is currently operating with a plan to put the device on sale around the same time — or very soon after — the new non-foldable models,” Gurman wrote, citing people with knowledge of the matter. The reporter added that “Apple engineers believe they’ve solved problems with screen quality and overall durability, two long-running flaws with phones in this category. That includes making the display’s crease less visible when it’s unfolded.”

Gurman previously reported that Apple’s foldable iPhone will be priced around $2,000, and its inner display, similar in size to an iPad mini, will be capable of displaying two iOS apps side by side. The reporter also mentioned the presence of just two camera sensors on the back and a new small hole-punch cutout for the front-facing camera. With no room for a Face ID sensor, the foldable iPhone will use a Touch ID sensor on the side button.

Apple’s foldable iPhone is reportedly part of a multi-year roadmap to reinvent Apple’s main product. The company already launched a slimmer iPhone Air and redesigned iPhone Pro and Pro Max models last fall, and Gurman believes that a more substantial iPhone redesign is coming in 2027 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the device. In a previous report, Gurman mentioned that the 20th anniversary iPhone will feature “curved glass sides around the entire phone, even at the edges,” and “extraordinarily slim bezels and no cutout section in the screen.”
