Google Drive is Dropping Support for Windows 8 and 8.1 in August

Google Drive is dropping support for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 this summer. In an update to a support page spotted by Android Police, Google explained that support will end in August, and affected users should either upgrade to Windows 10 or use the web app. Moreover, the 32-bit version of the sync client is also being discontinued.

“In August 2023, we’re ending support for Drive for desktop on Windows 8/8.1, Windows Server 2012, and all 32-bit versions of Windows. To avoid service interruption, Windows users should upgrade to Windows 10 (64 bit) or higher before August 2023. Users of a 32-bit version of Windows can still access Drive through a browser,” the company wrote.

Just like Microsoft’s OneDrive sync client on Windows, the Google Drive app integrates with File Explorer to let users access all their content more easily. The app can also be configured to back up local photos and videos to Google Photos.

As Microsoft ended support for Windows 8.1 in January 2023, it no longer makes sense for developers to waste any more resources on this OS. The versions 109 of Microsoft and Google Chrome released in January were the last to support the 11-year-old OS. Mozilla Firefox, however, will continue to provide security updates to Windows 8.1 users until September 2024.
