In his quest to transform X/Twitter into an “everything app”, Elon Musk shared some of the company’s plans regarding live streaming. Musk, who is himself a gamer, recently tested streaming video games on the platform on his own, and it seems to work pretty well.

In the video below around 40 minutes (via @xDaily), Musk says streaming video games on X will eventually be possible on Xbox and PlayStation consoles. “We will add in streaming for Xbox and PS5,” Musk said. “You know, we’re not trying to do everything better than every other app, but we wanna say that, okay, if you wanna do something within the X system or the X platform, you can do it if you want,” Musk added.

Musk mentioning upcoming support for consoles for video streaming on X is quite interesting. On PS4 and PS5, streaming to YouTube and Twitch is natively integrated into the consoles’ operating systems. On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, Twitch and Discord are the two native streaming options, but until recently, streaming on Twitch required Xbox gamers to download the Twitch app from the Microsoft Store.

It’s not clear yet if X will work with Sony and Microsoft to get video streaming natively integrated into Xbox and PS5 consoles, or if the company can make it work via an app users need to download. Anyway, it likely won’t be easy for X to compete with well-established live-streaming platforms. Moreover, it probably doesn’t help that the “X” brand seems to be referring to adult content.

Earlier this year, Microsoft discontinued the existing Twitter integration on Xbox consoles, which allowed gamers to post screenshots and game clips on the platform. This was likely the consequence of the brutal API changes that suddenly made it expensive for other platforms to integrate with Twitter/X.

It’s pretty weird to see the platform trying to woo gamers now, but as Musk said during his Diablo IV stream test, the exec hopes that X being capable of doing many, many things is what will ultimately matter. “I think the very specialist apps are still gonna be probably better than us in a lot of ways, but you know, I think we can be the best generalist app,” Musk said. “There’s some value to being a generalist app for, I guess, discovery and for interacting with the largest number of people in the world.”
