Google is updating its Google Calendar web app this week with a some subtle UI changes and a new dark mode. The design updates are now rolling out to all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google accounts.
The refreshed UI on Google Calendar is inspired by the company’s “Material 3” design language, with an effort to make buttons, dialogs, and sidebars more “modern and accessible.” Users will also notice new typefaces and iconography to make the web app more pleasant to use.
While Gmail buries its dark mode inside its Themes section, the new dark mode in Google Calendar will be more accessible: Users will just need to navigate to Settings > Appearance and select Light, Dark or Device default.
“This will provide you with a more comfortable, customizable viewing experience and can also reduce battery usage, the Google Workspace team emphasized. Earlier this year, Google also added dark mode support to Google Drive on the web, but other Google Workspace apps such as Docs, Sheets, and Slides are still missing a dark mode option.
One last note about this Google Calendar update: If you’ve been using browser extensions to get a dark mode in the app, the Google Workspace team warned that this new design update may break them.
