Threads Wants to Help Users Find People They Follow on X

Meta Threads app

Meta’s Threads app has started testing a new feature to help users find the people they’re already following on Twitter/X. This social graph import feature was first shared on X by security engineer and ex-Threads employee Jane Manchun Wong, and Meta also confirmed its existence to TechCrunch.

“We’re currently testing a way for you to find and follow creators from other platforms on Threads, making it easier to connect with the people and conversations that matter to you,” said Meta spokesperson Alec Booker in an emailed statement with the publication.

With over 300 million monthly active users in December, Threads emerged as one of the biggest competitors to Twitter/X, beating Bluesky, which has close to 35 million registered users as of this writing. Threads, which requires an Instagram account, lets users follow the same accounts they already follow on Instagram. The process of finding X users isn’t as seamless, however.

You may see a pop-up advertising this new X social graph import feature when opening the Threads mobile app. To find the same people they’re already following on X, Threads users will need to manually download an archive of their data from X’s Settings and then upload their following.js file to Threads.net.

Requesting X data archives can take up to three days, and it’s not exactly clear how Meta manages to find contact matches on Threads. The company did tell TechCrunch that the beta feature will work for “popular creators”, so your mileage may vary.
