WhatsApp can now use AI to summarize your chat conversations. The new AI-powered message summaries leverage Meta AI, the slightly controversial AI assistant that Meta integrated into WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook before making it available as a standalone app.
Message Summaries in WhatsApp are off by default, and the new Advanced Chat Privacy feature that WhatsApp launched in April also lets users select which conversations can be summarized by Meta AI. However, the WhatsApp team made it clear that it doesn’t see the content from conversations that are summarized by Meta AI.
“Message Summaries uses Private Processing technology, which allows Meta AI to generate a response without Meta or WhatsApp ever seeing your messages or the private summaries. No one else in the chat can see that you summarized unread messages either. This means your privacy is protected at all times,” the company emphasized.
The new AI-powered message summaries are rolling out first to English-speaking users in the US, and the WhatsApp team plans to bring them to other languages and countries later this year.
