Google Now Lets US and Indian Users Choose Their Preferred News Sources in Search

Google Preferred sources in Search

Google is launching a new feature in the US and India that lets users pick up their preferred news sources appearing in the “Top Stories” section of search results. Selecting news sources will make them appear more frequently in the Top Stories carousel, as well as a dedicated “From your sources” section that will appear below it.

This new “Preferred Sources” feature was previously made available in June as a Google Labs experiment. Users who previously signed up to test the feature will see their previous preferences continue to apply in search results.

“You can select as many sources as you like, and we learned from our early Labs users that people really value being able to select a range of sources — with over half of users choosing four or more,” the company explained in the announcement. To select sources, Google Search users in the US and India need to search for a timely topic, click on the new Cards Star icon to the right of Top Stories, and then search and choose their preferred sources.

While selecting specific sources will make them appear more frequently in Top Stories and the new “From your sources” section, Google says that users will “still see content from other sites.” However, the company is also recommending publishers to get their readers to choose them as their preferred sources with a new button they can add to their websites.
