Google Maps Now Offers Gemini Guidance for Walking and Cycling

Google Maps Gemini guidance walking cycling

The Gemini AI integration in Google Maps is improving with the new support for walking and cycling. The assistant can now provide hands-free guidance outside the car, help users find nearby locations, and more.

When walking, Gemini can provide an overview of an area and highlight its main points of interest. Users can also ask Gemini to add certain landmarks to their route, which may be useful when exploring a city. Gemini can also surface nearby restaurants and other useful locations.

People using Google Maps when cycling will also be able to ask Gemini their ETA, send text messages, check calendar appointments, and more. Just like in the car, Gemini can also be used to report traffic disruptions.

Gemini guidance for walking and cycling is now rolling out worldwide in all markets where the AI assistant is available. It will be interesting to see if Google plans to better integrate Gemini into Waze, which gained a Gemini-powered conversational reporting feature back in October 2024.
