Bitwarden recently revealed a big price increase in an announcement about enhancements to its Premium and Families plans. But it remains one of the least expensive password managers and it retains a solid free plan.
“To reflect expanded security capabilities and ongoing innovation, subscriptions to Bitwarden Premium and Families plans have been updated,” Bitwarden explains. “Premium for individuals is now available at $1.65 per month, billed annually at $19.80 a year. The Families plan is available at $3.99 per month, billed annually at $47.88 a year for up to six users. Bitwarden continues as the most competitively priced password manager on the market.”
Well. Yes, I suppose. As I wrote in 2026 Security Checkup: Password Manager First Steps ⭐ recently, Bitwarden is the only viable free alternative to Proton Pass, but 1Password, Bitwarden, Dashlane, and Proton Pass are all competitively priced once you get to the paid tiers. (My article already reflected the new pricing.) If you need a paid password manager because of the additional functionality, you should choose the best one instead of just paying the minimum.
Bitwarden justifies its price hike by offering several new features to Premium and Family users, including vault health alerts, password coaching, 5x the attachment storage (now 5 GB), 2x the security key support (now up to 10 security keys), and a phisher blocker that’s coming soon. These are in addition to existing premium features like passkey login, Bitwarden Send for secure sharing, and email alias and masking integrations.
None of the new features seem all that impressive, But to be fair to Bitwarden, even the new pricing, though doubled, is reasonable. And existing customers will get a one-time discount the first year: Premium and Family subscribers will receive a 25 percent loyalty discount when they renew. Plus, the free plan will meet most users needs. As, by the way, will that of Proton Pass, the password manager I use and recommend.
You can compare the free and premium Bitwarden plans for yourself on the Bitwarden website.
