Mozilla Firefox for iOS Now Has a Built-in Ad Blocker

Mozilla Firefox iOS Ad Blocker

Mozilla is bringing a new ad-blocker to its Firefox browser on iOS. The new feature will complement the browser’s existing Enhanced Tracking Protection feature, but it won’t be turned on by default.

While Enhanced Tracking Protection on Firefox for iOS is designed to block most web trackers, the new built-in ad blocker uses Apple’s WebKit Content Blocker technology and the EasyList filter list to block most third-party ads. This is different from the desktop and Android experience, where more advanced ad-blocking and privacy extensions are available.

“Ad Blocker won’t block every ad. Ads served directly by the site you’re visiting and ads shown in search results will still appear. Sponsored shortcuts and other sponsored content shown by Firefox when you open a new tab are separate from ads on the web pages you visit, so Ad Blocker doesn’t affect them,” Mozilla explained today.

While Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi preceded Firefox in bringing a built-in ad blocker to the iOS version of their web browsers, it’s nice to see Mozilla finally do the same on Firefox. “Giving people choice in how they experience the web is important to us,” the Firefox team said today.

To enable this new Ad Blocker in Firefox, you’ll need to go to Settings > Browsing > Ad Blocker. You can also enable or disable Ad Blocking at any time from the Site menu while browsing.
