Opera Replaces Classic Web Browser with Opera One

Opera One web browser with Aria AI

Opera announced today that Opera One, its first web browser with native AI, is now available across Windows, Mac, and Linux. The browser features a native AI feature called Aria, a new modular design, and new features like tab islands, and it runs on top of a new architecture.

“As people who obsess over browser innovation, we saw fit to rethink the role of the browser in light of the recent developments in the AI space,” Opera product director Joanna Czajka said. “As opposed to other browser companies, Opera didn’t simply add AI services to its browser. We went back to the drawing board and redesigned our flagship browser. Opera One is built around Aria, our native browser AI, and is the culmination of our work so far.”

Here’s what’s new.

Aria, the first native browser AI. Opera One features Aria, which provides users with generative AI capabilities for free. It’s the result of a collaboration with OpenAI and is based on Opera’s Composer AI engine, which connects to ChatGPT 3.5 and is powered by live results from the web. To interact with Aria, users can open a new command line by typing WINKEY + CTRL and then ask a question. Aria then responds in the browser’s sidebar. (Aria is also shipping today in Opera’s Android web browser.)

Tab islands. This new tabbed browser feature addresses the issue with most web browsers where it’s difficult to jump between sets of tasks because of messy tab management. To do so, Tab islands automatically groups related tabs together, and these groups can be collapsed or saved into bookmarks or a pinboard, and the user can easily differentiate and switch between them.

Modular design and new architecture. Opera One is built to be more modular so that it can more easily be updated with new AI-based features going forward. And this new design is built on top of a new browser architecture with a multithreaded compositor that speeds the user interface.

Opera One is available for free from the Opera website.
