Mozilla Brings Over 500 Extensions to Firefox on Android

Extensions in Firefox on Android

Mozilla announced this past week that Firefox users on Android can now access over 500 extensions for the mobile browser. (Well, at the time of the announcement, it reported over 450 extensions. But there are over 500 today.)

“Extensions were first created as a way for people to customize their own internet experience, from artists designing themes to developers who wanted to make extensions to improve people’s web experience,” Mozilla vice president Vicky Chin said. “We’re thrilled to bring this experience to Firefox for Android, where we’re the only major Android browser to support an open extension ecosystem. In the coming months, we plan to enable more extensions for people to choose from and customize their own mobile Internet experience.”

Mozilla previously announced in August that it was building the open infrastructure needed to bring extensions (back) to Firefox on Android, and in a big way. Since then, it’s been working with extension makers to help them port their work to this new system. Given the number of extensions it offers at launch, that appears to have been quite successful, and many must-have extensions like Dark Reader, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, and uBlock Origin are already available.

You can download Firefox for Android from the Google Play Store. And those curious about the extensions selection can visit the Firefox for Android extensions page on the Firefox Browser Add-Ons website.

I’m going to have to test this: Between the extension support and Firefox’s integration with Pocket, which I use every day, this suddenly looks a lot more compelling.
