Perplexity Launches an AI Web Browser

Perplexity announced today that its Comet AI-powered web browser is now available to those who subscribe to Perplexity Max, a $200-per-month service.

“The internet has become humanity’s extended mind while our tools for using it remain primitive,” the announcement post notes. “Our interface for the web should be as fluid and responsive as human thought itself. We built Comet to let the internet do what it has been begging to do: To amplify our intelligence.”

If you’ve paid attention to the AI browser work that The Browser Company, Opera, and others have done, this will feel familiar. Comet has the expected web browser features, but Perplexity AI is used as the search engine, and its built-in AI agent works on your behalf to do things for you on the web. A demo video shows it driving Google Maps and summarizing answers from Reddit, and a search for a moment from a live event not only brings up the right video but also navigates to the right place in the video.

According to Perplexity, Comet replaces browsing sessions with single, seamless interactions and transforms complex workflows into fluid conversations. It can book meetings, send emails, buy something, and provide a daily brief.

“In the DNA of Comet is Perplexity’s obsession with accurate and trustworthy answers,” the team continues. “Every day, trillions of dollars of decisions are made online, and the quality of those decisions depends on the reliability of the information behind them. Ask Comet to compare insurance plans. Ask Comet to help you understand a technology enough to decide whether to invest … Comet is like a second brain, helping with the best possible decisions in every situation.”

Granted, it’s not going to do this for too many people at $200 per month. But Perplexity plans to bring it to lower-cost tiers and free users too.

Comet is available now on Windows and Mac, but it’s coming to “other platforms” in the coming months. You can learn more on the Perplexity website.
