Vivaldi 7.8 "Extends the Middle Finger" to AI

Vivaldi made some noise last summer when it said that it would never integrate AI capabilities into its web browser. But now it’s ramping up the messaging with action: The latest release of its flagship desktop web browser adds features that solve real problems for users instead of just adding AI features no one wants.

“While every major browser is racing to cram AI assistants into their products, Vivaldi is dropping a middle finger to that entire approach,” a Vivaldi representative told me. “We’re launching the most advanced tab multitasking system any browser has ever shipped, drag-and-drop tab tiling, unlimited flexible grids, [the ability to] open links directly into split views, and pinned tabs that finally respect domain boundaries. It’s the kind of powerful features we’ve spent years perfecting and it fundamentally changes how you work with your browser.”

Here’s what’s new in Vivaldi 7.8.

Drag-and-drop tab tiling. Now, you can create split-screen layouts by dragging tabs into a workspace. Unlike browsers that are limited to two side-by-side tabs, Vivaldi supports unlimited flexible grid layouts.

Open link in tiled tab.: Now, you can right-click any link to open it in a new tab next to the current tab and the current tab stays visible.

Smarter pinned tabs. Pinned tabs now enforce domain boundaries. “Your mail tab stays on mail, your project tool stays on the project,” Vivaldi notes. “No more accidental navigation breaking your pinned tab setup.”

Cross-window mail access. Vivaldi’s built-in email client is now more deeply integrated into the browser and works across all browser windows and workspaces.

“The entire browser industry is solving the wrong problem,” Vivaldi co-founder and CEO Jon von Tetzchner says. “They’re building assistants that filter what you see, decide what you don’t see, and ultimately outsource your judgment. We’re building tools that amplify your ability to explore, compare, and think. One approach treats you like a passenger. The other [Vivaldi] treats you like a pilot.”

Vivaldi 7.8 is available now for Windows, Mac, and Linux. You can learn more an and download the browser from the Vivaldi website.
