Google is Adding Three New Features to Chrome

Google announced that it is improving its flagship Chrome web browser on desktop this week with three new features.

“This week, we’re rolling out new security and performance features in Chrome — just in time for any last-minute gift browsing,” Chrome group product manager Sabine Borsay writes in the announcement post. “Get more proactive alerts from Safety Check, see more usage details in Memory Saver mode and save your tab groups.”

Here’s what’s new:

Safety Check improvements. Chrome’s Safety Check feature alerts you when it detects a compromised password or malicious extension, but now it runs in the background and provides proactive alerts, not just for passwords and extensions, but also for site permissions and browser updates. Safety Check will also revoke site permissions—like location and microphone access—when you haven’t visited a site in a long time. And it will alert you to disable notifications from sites you don’t engage with a lot.

Memory Saver improvements. Google added Memory Saver and other performance controls to Chrome in December 2022, and now it’s improving Memory Saver with more details about tabs memory usage and a clearer way to mark sites that should always remain active.

Saved tab groups. Chrome users will soon be able to save the tab groups they create so that they can get them back later on the same and other devices. This is rolling out “over the next few weeks,” Google says.
