Mitchell Baker announced today that she is stepping down as Mozilla’s CEO after 3 years to reassume her previous role as executive chairwoman.
“During my 25 years at Mozilla, I’ve worn many hats, and this move is driven by a desire to streamline our focus and leadership for the challenges ahead,” she writes in the announcement post. “I’ve been leading the Mozilla business through a transformative period, while also overseeing Mozilla’s broader mission. It’s become evident that both endeavors need dedicated full-time leadership.”

Mozilla board member Laura Chambers will assume the CEO role, Baker says, and she will focus on product vision and strategy, doubling down on Firefox, and bring new products to market. She was most recently the CEO of Willow Innovations, but she previously held roles at Airbnb, eBay, and PayPal.
As for Baker, she will focus on policy, open source, and community and provide a more consistent public face for the company as it tries to advance its policy and community goals with greater urgency and speed.
“There’s a tectonic shift underway as everyone battles to own the future of AI,” she adds. “It is Mozilla’s opportunity and imperative to forge a better future.”
