- The text on the homepage is too close to each other

- When I change the layout of the Recent News block, the settings should be saved. Right now, I have to change it everytime I reload the site which is a pita.

The font is way to small.. I’m way to old to read that tiny text .

Can we please bring back a more normal font size, so I dont need binoculars infront of my computer to be able to read?

The two bars offsetting the "Currently on Forums" are green. Nothing else on the site is green. The sudden introduction of a color that seems outside of the general theme of the site bothers me.

Not a fan of the new design I must say, but when you after all decided to make the new design , couldnt you have fixed the logo?

It has been something I have bugged me for a long time , also contacted Paul about that a long time ago… the Thurrott logo is blurry

When you did the redesign and choose an extremly small font size, I’m forced to zoom in , and then the blurry logo gets even worse of course.

Maybe ït’s time to put up a logo in SVG format ? Seems like a rather basic thing, and if you payed for someone to do this redesign, this is something they should haved mentioned I feel. Otherwise they are more interseted in taking your money then provide you with the best design possible.

Another feedback, the forum dropdown menu (for the ‘breadcrumbs’) has no background so when it goes over a text on the page, the menu’s text and the text on the page goes in to each other making it hard to read.

Well the middle option (in this case ‘Community feedback’) dropdown menu have a background ..the last ‘Breadcrumb’ (in this case ‘Dev’) has not ..

The highlighted portion at the top shows the user name when logged in. Presumably the site knows whether a logged in user is Premium member or not. If they are a Premium member, then is the 10th link from the right in the section immediately below T Thurrott tm The Home for . . ., that is, the one displaying Join Premium, necessary?

Purely subjective, but I don’t like the newest article being larger than all the preceding articles.

NOT SUBJECTIVE: Now that there are 3 options for main site article layout, I prefer the middle one which looks most like the former layout. However, if I click to a forum link, then use my browser’s Back button to return to the main site, my previous layout preferences is lost and I have the @#$%&*! default tiled layout again, so I have to select my preferred layout again. The article layout preference should be persistent.

I do like the Forum list on the right.

Picky: for those of us LOGGED IN as Premium members, do we really need a Join Premium link in the menu/tool bar?

All in all, the new site really isn’t RTM quality. Looks like there’s going to be a prolonged beta for a while.

The headlines in the "Petri" stories column on the righthand side of this Forum page extend beyond the right boundary of the page. I have a screen capture that shows what I mean, but no way to upload it to this comment.

Maybe it is just me and I am getting old but, I don’t see imgur.com as the sollution to getting an image into a comment. I really don’t want to learn a new tool that I probably won’t use again once you all fix your site. Just don’t see sending people to another site to enable them to input an image (especially when it involves fixing the first site.)

Totally agree. I do admire them for trying to redesign the home page on their own with their busy schedule, but I do think it would be better to hire some professional webdesigners to do the redesign in this case. Sure it costs some money, but the result will be much better if they know what their doing. (and Paul and Brad, if you actually have hired a professional webdesigner to do this .. I’m sorry, it realyl does not look like it. )

Right now the page is just kind of a mess … I prefered the old design, because I was a clean design, easy to navigate and had a font size that was readable and it worked great on a mobile as well.

Now it is tiny text all over the place for articles, but the fontsize is not even consistent because text in the forum is much bigger. (it’s like it was the Xbox store design team that was involved or something :) ) Except for when you try and write a comment in the basic homemade comment system, then the text is tiny …but when you submit it becomas bigger. So it is hard to see what you have written, until you post, and then you can see your misttakes, and then you cant edit..

The logo is still blurry , no change there .. menu system is not consitent . and try and cram all kinds of articles in a small space that just makes it hard to find anything in general.. It’s like The Verge, but with a tiny tiny font or a bad copy of Windows central ..

Brad a think a lot of confusion could be fixed if the Featured posts at the top were limited to 300px… Currently the featured post wrapper sits around 478px and due to how people read content (F Shaped reading and the like) recent posts feel way less important than they should. Here’s an example of what the index might look like with a 300px hard cap on featured article images –

Where to begin?

I can’t tell what’s what chronologically anymore. You have podcasts and Petri stuff smack dab in the middle of articles on the main page. Don’t try to mimic The Verge – their navigation sucks too.

I like the new design. Nice clean simple look. I like the smaller cleaner headers, but that could be because I have new glasses and they are easy to read now. I wonder how this will display on my Lumia 950XL. Cudo’s to Paul and Brad and a huge "Well done!!!" to the IT guys and Web dev’s behind the scene. I relaly like the rolling blog post "currently on forums" thing-a-ma-jig on the right hand side.

I like it. Nice clean design, and it’s especially nice to get the forums featured prominently on the sidebar. Just echoing some other comments here, I would like to see the text being a little larger – especially on the article excerpts and navigation bar, and the page layout options need to be saved between visits.

It would be nice to get a little more visual distinction as to where the podcasts section ends and the post list continues, especially when using the default layout or on a mobile device. Currently they sort of merge together when skimming through. Perhpaps another thin black bar like there is at the top? Similar to how the "Trending on Petri" section is clearly seperate from the chronological news with bars on the top and bottom and even slightly different background.

Clicking "OLDER POSTS" on the homepage is currently taking me to https://www.thurrott.com/all-posts and giving me a page not found error. Older articles from when Disqus was used for comments incorrectly disalay 0 comments in the top right of the article and article bylines when browsing through sections. Also seems like the bottom navigation bar is not quite finished. For example, "About us" and "Meet Paul" link to the same page, the headers and "Our writers" don’t link anywhere, "Thurrott Daily" and "Thurrott Basic" link to the same page etc.

Hope this is helpful. 🙂 Love the site, and looking forward to further new features as alluded to in the First Ring Daily.

My first instinct was "oooh, this is a little busy and the fonts are really small"… I like the overall feel of the site though. Just make fonts a bit bigger, and try not to cram so much in. I’m not averse to a bit of scrolling.

Oh also, remember when Office 2013 came out in beta and the default theme was white and everybody complained? It feels a bit like that here now. I’d like a bit more contrast between the background and the grey elements, which at present are too light.

Tough crowd, which I’m sure you all expected. It is quite a sudden change. For those complaining about the chronological list of articles on the home page, if you play around with the list button for the Recent Stories it puts it back in a chronological list (with the section for podcasts shoved in the middle of it). It won’t stay that way, though, if you leave the front page. Until they make the change stick, you’ll have to change it manually each time.

My biggest complaint is the the podcatsts and trending on petri stuck in the middle of the article … it actualy took me a minute (even after changing the view style back) to realise that the podcasts section ended and the articles started back up .. there needs to be a older articles headline at the very least between those sections.

i love the currently on forums section!
can we please have the the Thurrott on petri article just integrated into the news feed with like an on petri logo where a premium logo would go? .. PLEASE!!

then the trending on petri can go where the thurrott on petri is!

i think thats everything i have for now

thanks guys.. i love how much love you are giving to this site though :)

I realize the site design is new and I need to get used to it to some degree, but it strikes me as a little disorganized. The podcast section is sandwiched in between the stores and it doesn’t flow well to break up the articles (additionally, there is no bottom boundary to the podcasts the way there is on the top). I personally would rather see the podcasts along the right hand side like the ‘Currently on Forums’ section just to give some structure to where you look for things. If you want logical breaks for the articles, I would break articles from today in one section, yesterday in one section, past week in another section, etc – but title it that way so that the reader understands. If it helps, I’m using Edge on a 1920 x 1200 screen.

Hi Brad, can you comment on how you make you design changes. Do you do the theme development? Did the old site use a basic theme? What plugins do you use? And what editor do you and Paul write your articles in?

  • 5542

Honestly, and I want to get this right because I can’t edit, I think the new format is, shall we say, less than ideal. I did find it funny that it looks like Apple News but unlike Apple News I’m confronted by a visual assault. The old site was simple and easy. It ran chronologically and you could quickly skim to the latest and greatest. Now I’m not sure what the $#@%! is going on when I get to the landing page. Perhaps if it had always been this way I’d be used to it, maybe it’s the natural human aversion to change, but I’m thinking I won’t be around much anymore. I simply don’t have time to look over the mighty grid of articles looking for what’s new since my last visit. Amusingly I’ll now rely on Apple News to inform me of articles of interest. Like the move away from Discus I feel like this was done to serve a business purpose not a user need. That’s fine but this user, and this might be a side benefit, will be coming here less often.

The font is too small and I have very good eyesight.
Not usre what stories are new anymore and the top bar of stories is way to big, so just scrolling down each time.
Really like the previous site, it worked well everywhere. The new design for me is old fashioned looking and messy on tablets and phones and with the font just impossible to read and its now hard to navigate easily.

I agree with other members that it is too busy and hard to navigate. I checked out the view you mentioned and that is the view I like, only two things with it:

1. Is it possible for the humongous screenshot that you have for the first article to become as small as the other articles when selecting this view. I know it is a way of highlighting a specific article, but I may not be interested in it at all and it pretty much takes over the first screen and I have to scroll down to see other articles.

2. The selected view is not saved through sessions, not even the same session. If I select that view and then click on "refresh" or press F5, it returns to the default view. I would like to have that view saved as my default until I change it back. Preferrably in my profile and not a cookie, so that it carries over to other PC’s or the phones or "InPrivate" browsing sessions.

Hey Everyone,

We hear you! We see the fonts and spacing issues and realize that is a readbility issue. The ultimate design is clean, readable and very functional just as you have seen on other parts of the site as we have been rolling out this summer.

The homepage over the next couple of days will take it’s final form. Thank you for jumping on board and giving valuable feedback to the team.

Just checked on my phone too and the layout becomes much more organized. But still way too small text and what is up with the double hamburger menu? and with one in each top corner on its own top bar? There is a big gray space under the logo and also the picture for the top article its too big on the right side.

Hi

First off, congratulations for the premium stuff on this site (this is my 1st comment as an alpha member).

The main issue I see is with the website navigation. It should have more emphasis, be easier to remark and with larger fonts. (This is about the desktop version) A dark background with white fonts would help.

Also, the fonts are way too small. My sight is fine, I love tidy things, but this is a bit too much.

Echoing others, but you need to know our opinions. Not good. When I came to the site this morning I actually thought I mistyped the URL or something. Then I started to look at it and thought, what happened did their CSS get all jacked up? Busy and out of order. Unrelated junk (podcasts) in the middle of the content (hint: that should be in a navigation area). I’m sure you can tweak it and keep some of the new stuff without the loss of usability that you have now.

Way too busy. Hard to follow, lot thrown at once, and way too many sections. It seems very clear that little to no usability testing was done.

Some of the other views are better (note: better, not good), but I would not have noticed it if Brad hadn’t called it out which means it is not good design. If these are better, they should be default view (but again, that would not fix this mess of a new site).

Likes:

-Small text, I like sites that are easy to scan and fit more information on screen at one time

-Clear layout, it is easy to know where to look for stories, podcasts, Petri content, etc…

Dislikes:

-Keep needing to login everytime I visit the site despite checking the "Remember Me" box

-The "Premium" blue banner covers the Vimeo control buttons on podcast videos

I have to echo what most others have said. Too busy, the middle view/layout is the best IMHO, but the setting doesn’t stick. And the fonts are way to small. I liked the old layout a lot better.

Just a bug report: I’m using Edge (on 1607) and on the homepage, the icons that you use to change the layout style all appear as the same icons.

Oh and just personal feedback. For the menu bar of the site with the categories on it, I prefered it when it had a background colour to it. The top of the page is very white now, the menu bar can be missed.

Like others, I find it too busy.

Take a look at autosport.com</a>. The site has the same core model and layout. Advert supported free content and paid for content (they call it plus rather than premium) with subscriber only in depth articles and advert free (I pay for plus too).

What autosport.com has done well, from a design point of view, is made the layout consistent. It’s easy to find the news articles, easy to find opinion and still has the same header feature pane and so on like thurrott.com. Free members and plus members are able to set their layout preferences, so as a user if I logon from a different computer my preferred layout follows me and therefore is not reliant on cookies (I’m not 100% sure how it works).

Oh and the default font is on the small side. I’m on a 14" FHD laptop and it’s a tad too small.

I guess what I’m trying to say is I think it is too busy because there’s no clear division of where content can be quickly found. Like a lot of people, I visit a whole bunch of sites when I get a spare few mins. I want to hit a site and dig straight to the type of content I’m looking for. So if I want something news based, head to say mid top left. In depth, use the right-side nav bar (see autosport.com for such examples).

Clicking on Sort by DATE works in Forums, but clicking once sorts commnents oldest-to-newest. I’ll bet you 99% of people wanting to sort by date want newest-to-oldest. One click should be newest-to-oldest, two clicks oldest-to-newest.

Would be great if images in articles would open in a photo viewer, rather than opening the images in a new page, displaying the .jpg. This would make it much easier to view the photos without having to actually change URL’s/go back a page to resume reading the post.

Needs a forums-only search function. Wanted to search forums posts before posting, but no dice. Search this site only bring up articles.

Search this site box also has some interesting display behavior (IE11), depending on window width. The dynamic resizing goes from not visible to fully displayed to only Search is visible as the window is resized.

Let’s throw in Insert/edit image, since I tried to use it for this post. Looks like only online picture links work (my guess). No local browse or file type preferences indicated.

I thought we were going to see some changes on the site design.
Really liked the original thurrott site.
But this one is just messy on a pc desktop. Looks like a website we used to have many years ago or one of those horrid amateur csc ones.
On a phone and tablet it scrolls nicely down quickly and works fairly well.
Sorry, but its not working for me.
Not really sure what Im looking at most of the time, the news just seems cobbled further down and lost with the podcast stuff, that should be on the right. Where are the last weeks articles, not easy to understand them for the front page.
ON the PC at the tiop are two rows of banners with stories, some going way back, 19th october, would be good to have a publish date on the description.

What is the big pic of this Brad guy in sunglasses all about, I think he has been on twit a few times. I though this was Paul Thurrott website.

Whats is the Alpha thing all about, you see on peoples name?

Oh by the way, spell check does not work when posting comments here or in the forum.
