So, over the weekend, I picked up a very gently used Surface Pro X on Facebook Marketplace. I haven’t used an ARM Windows device since the original Surface RT days (I did also have an RT2 for a bit), so I was admittedly skeptical going into it. But after having used it for a couple days, I can also say that I think Windows on ARM is absolutely the future. This thing is fantastic. I mean, I’m not gonna do any serious gaming or video editing on it, but I can tell you it’s absolutely fine for everything else I do on a daily basis. Absolutely fine. I’ve been able to install most everything I need from the Microsoft Store, and with x86/x64 support, I can also get and run everything I use on a daily basis. I was able to leverage all of my existing Surface hardware peripherals (dock, wireless display adapter, dial, etc.). And the battery life is phenomenal, because…it’s ARM. No fans, no noise, no heat. Seriously, I can’t see myself going back to Intel for a mobile-first daily driver.
I think if Microsoft could somehow get over the bad PR of Windows on ARM as some kind of a compromised experience (because it’s absolutely not) and get more people to try these things, they’d have a hit on their hands.
