Synaptic Touchpad Precision Driver

Hi guys. I have an HP Spectre x360 purchased last spring; the one with the Whisky Lake CPU. It shipped with a Synaptics Touchpad and drivers. The lack of Precision drivers has been a common complaint about the Spectre x360. After I upgraded to Windows 2004 via the slow ring I noticed that the touchpad is now listed as a Precision Touchpad in Settings. Has anyone else noted this?

Unfortunately, the touchpad doesn’t work as well. After a reboot it works fine for a while. After the computer has sat for a while the touchpad becomes glitchy, with marked lags during use. There is no option to roll back drivers in Device Manager.

There's been an unofficial way to swap the Synaptics driver for Precision for the last few years of Spectre's – details on reddit (involves installing a Lenovo driver). Perhaps try that; apparently it works well. Or, of course you could download and install the regular Synaptics driver from the HP site if you just want it back like it was.

In reply to adam.mt:

I had read about those unofficial methods of adding Precision Drivers but I never employed them; I never had a problem with the Synaptics drivers myself. The touchpad worked well for me. Plus there were some subsequent posts on those threads that indicated that this method didn't always go well. I think people had problems after upgrading to a new Windows 10 version and so I didn't consider it worth the potential trouble.

The latest Synaptics drivers on the HP site for this computer are for Windows 10 1903. When I tried to install them I received the error message: "The driver is not supported for this OS version (10.0.19041)."

I was wondering if anyone else noted the automatic upgrade to Precision drivers with Windows 10 2004.

I spoke with HP recently and brought up this model. They seemed to believe that the problems had been fixed with drivers over time, but that hadn't been my experience. I haven't seen the precision drivers appear, to my knowledge, but I'm not sure if I have that laptop here still. Will check.

There haven't been any new ones for 2004, and old ones don't install any longer. No problems until 2004 and the Precision drivers. My previous generation Spectre x360 with Windows 10 1909, that is still being used by a family member, has not given problems either.
