Discord’s Game Store Launches Worldwide

Posted on October 16, 2018 by Mehedi Hassan in Games with 4 Comments

In August, Discord launched something that was quite inevitable: a gaming store. The company’s service is already a leading communication service for gamers, and the new game store makes it the perfect platform for gamers.

Discord is today launching the new gaming store worldwide, in beta. The company has been testing the new store with some of its users in Canada, so it was very limited at the beginning. Now that the service has matured, it’s now coming to everyone else.

Discord’s gaming store includes a wide range of different games, though the library is obviously not as big as Steam as of yet. It includes a library where you can find all your installed games and launch them directly from within Discord, too. It will also include a bunch of First on Discord games that are exclusive to Discord for a limited time after launch. The main selling point for Discord’s store is Nitro, the company’s subscription service.

The service is now available for $9.99 a month as opposed to the previous $4.99 a month. for that, you will get free access to a growing library of games. Right now, Discord says there are 60 games that you will get direct access to as long as you subscribe to Nitro. And for those who don’t want these games and don’t want to pay $5 extra, Discord’s classic Nitro service will continue to be available as Nitro Classic for $4.99 a month.

Discord’s gaming store was long awaited. The company is already a huge threat to Valve’s Steam service with its massively popular communication platform, and the game store will completely kill off Steam if it manages to take off. For now, we will just have to wait and see how the service expands in the near future. Steam isn’t a small competitor to take down, you see.

I'm definitely not their target demo. I am VERY picky about the games I'll invest in. I only play first-person games, and even then I find very few that I find fun. Generally, the Half-Life series, Call of Duty, Titan Fall (the first one, because the sequel sucked beyond belief) and now I exclusively play Elite Dangerous. I tried PUBG and found it clunky, the graphics were horrible and I despise pretty much all deathmatch style games (they are pointless). Steam has typically been the host for those games. My only expose to Discord was because some of the people I play Elite Dangerous with prefer to use that instead of the in-game comms (which I actually prefer over Discord). I don't see what everyone likes about Discord, personally. I certainly don't understand why a gaming store has been "long-awaited", and I'm not about to subscribe to it.

Until they get a library of hundreds of games, there is nothing to see, or even consider, here. Too many better options.
