Cyberpunk 2077’s Free Next-Gen Upgrade is Out on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S

The much-anticipated next-gen upgrade for Cyberpunk 2077 is launching today on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 consoles. The free upgrade coincides with the release of the game’s patch 1.5, which introduces several changes to the core gameplay.

Cyberpunk 2077 was already optimized for the PS5 and the Xbox Series X|S, with the current-gen consoles being capable of running the game much better than the base Xbox One and PS4. Performance was actually so bad on last-gen consoles at launch that Sony went as far as pulling the game from its PlayStation Store for a couple of months.

With today’s patch 1.5, Cyberpunk 2077 delivers exclusive features to Xbox Series X|S and PS5 consoles including improved crowd reactions, faster loading times, ray-traced local shadows, and a variety of other visual and technical improvements. Both the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5 let gamers choose between a 30 FPS Ray Tracing Mode and a 60 FPS Performance with dynamic 4K scaling. However, Xbox Series S owners will be restricted to a single 1440p/30 FPS mode with no ray-traced shadows.

On all platforms, today’s patch 1.5 for Cyberpunk 2077 also introduces a revamped AI system for enemies and pedestrians, a more realistic drive model with changes to vehicle traffic, as well as new ways to customize your character. The skill tree has also been updated and players will need to reassign all their perk points for free.

All in all, this massive patch is a good opportunity for developer CD Projekt Red to redeem the reputation of a game that shipped in a pretty bad state, especially on last-gen consoles. In addition to this much-anticipated next-gen up, a free 5 hours trial of Cyberpunk 2077 is now available to download exclusively on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 consoles starting today.

I am sure Digital Foundry will have a good review on what is really going on in performance mode, as in the real resolution you drop down too on the XSX and PS5.

I will get this game, for PC, this coming holiday season when any and all DLC, plus the heavily patched game will be $29 or less.

Was this game primarily designed for PC or console? i.e. what is the better experience, mouse or controller? I have the choice of both.

It was designed for a high end PC from a technical perspective, but using a controller on PC is extremely nice. I wouldn’t bother with a keyboard and mouse since its a single player game with a hundred hours of content and I’m not competing with Johnny No Scope for the highest score.

I don’t think it was specifically designed for either control method. I prefer mouse&keyboard anytime I have to hold a gun and aim at something. I can’t stand aiming with a controller so I very much prefer PC. If you are fine with aiming with a controller, you can get either.

I played it a bit last night and it’s MUCH better now. I actually bought it on launch day but it looked so bad and had so many bugs that I got a refund for it(and that was on a Series X). Picked it up back over the holidays for ten bucks and was just holding onto it for this update.

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of my favourite game. I played it when it was available. The plot, music, views are awesome, but sometimes I couldn’t focus on that bc of the technical problems… but now it is better! Driving car became much more nicer. And other things became really better. I will definitely play Cyberpunk again later, hope to get DLC
