Sony’s PlayStation Portal Remote Player is Launching Later This Year at $199.99

PlayStation Portal

The “Project Q” handheld gaming device that Sony unveiled back in May now has a name and a price. Sony announced today that its first remote play device is named the PlayStation Portal, and it will launch later this year at $199.99/€219.99/£199.99.

The PlayStation Portal is designed for streaming games installed on your own PlayStation 5 console. The device comes with an 8-inch 1080p screen with a 60Hz refresh rate, and the controllers at the side of the screen offer the same adaptive triggers and haptic feedback technology as the PS5 DualSense controller.

“PlayStation Portal is the perfect device for gamers in households where they might need to share their living room TV or simply want to play PS5 games in another room of the house. PlayStation Portal will connect remotely to your PS5 over Wi-Fi**, so you’ll be able to swiftly jump from playing on your PS5 to your PlayStation Portal. PlayStation Portal can play supported games that are installed on your PS5 console and use the Dualsense controller,” the company said today.

So there you have it, Sony says this is really something you should use in your home with a solid Wi-Fi connection (Sony recommends at least 15Mbps of bandwidth). Moreover, PSVR2 games and cloud-enabled games available through PlayStation Plus Premium are not supported.

In addition to these PlayStation Portal details, Sony unveiled two new wireless audio devices today:

  • The Pulse Elite wireless headset ($149.99/€149.99/£129.99), a premium headset with a retractable boom mic and AI-enhanced noise rejection
  • The Pulse Explore wireless earbuds ($199.99/€219.99/£199.99), which offer dual microphones and AI-enhanced noise rejection

These new PlayStation wireless headset and earbuds connect to PS5 consoles and the PlayStation Portal via PlayStation Link, Sony’s proprietary wireless audio technology that supports lossless audio and lower latency. To use one of these headsets on a PS5, you’ll need a USB adapter that’s included with each headset. The adapter will also be sold separately for use on PCs and Macs.

Similar to how the Xbox Wireless headset and other wireless headsets work, the Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore will support a simultaneous Bluetooth connection in addition to the PlayStation Link connection to a PS5, PlayStation Portal, or PC and Mac (with the USB adapter). This can be useful to connect your phone via Bluetooth to these wireless headsets and earbuds while you’re playing games.

Just like the PlayStation Portal, the Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore will launch later this year. Sony said that launch details and pre-order details will be available soon.
