Digital Eclipse Announces Its Next Interactive Documentary, Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story

Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story

Good news, retro video game fans: Digital Eclipse has announced its next interactive documentary and it’s a worthy successor to The Making of Karateka: Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story will include 42 classic games from 8 different 1980s and 1990s video game platforms.

“Journey back in time to an era of cassette tapes, photocopied zines, and README.TXT,” the announcement post reads. “An era in which a kid with a Commodore VIC-20 and dreams of radioactive sheep could become one of Britain’s best-known game makers. A virtual museum of design documents, playable games, and all-new video features tell the fascinating story of a true independent game designer.”

Jeff Minter is of course a legend, and his video game releases speak for themselves with such hit titles as Sheep In Space, Andes Attack, Attack of the Mutant Camels, Matrix, Metagalactic Llamas Battle at the Edge of Time, Hellgate, Laser Zone, and many others. That these games were released across a wide variety of platforms—including the Sinclair ZX81, Sinclair Spectrum, Commodore VIC-20 and 64, Atari 8-bits, Atari ST, Atari Jaguar, and Konix Multi-System, whatever that is—just adds to the excitement here.

In addition to the 40+ playable original titles, Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story also includes a remastered version of the Commodore 64 title Gridrunner with modern graphics and sound, a virtual museum of design documents, a feature-length documentary and several other all-new video features, two of Minter’s earliest “light synthesizers,” Psychedelia and Colourspace (with all-new options and features optimized for controller-based play) and the demo version of Attack of the Mutant Camels for the unreleased Konix Multi-System console is also included. (Ah.)

Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story arrives this winter on GOG.com, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Steam, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. You can learn more on the Digital Eclipse website.
