New Xbox Update Fixes Baldur’s Gate 3 Save Bug

Microsoft released a software update on Xbox consoles yesterday to fix a save bug affecting Baldur’s Gate 3. Following the release of the high-profile RPG on Xbox Series X|S consoles on December 7, many players have been complaining about their saves disappearing for mysterious reasons.

On December 31, developer Larian Studios explained that it’s been working with Microsoft on a fix for this game save issue that would require an Xbox system update. “It occurs when exiting the game after saving. The game thinks the save was successful but due to a firmware issue, the save file is not fully committed to disk yet,” the company explained at the time.

Larian Studios had already suggested a workaround for the save bug, and it required Xbox users to enable cross-saves after creating a Larian account. Enabling this feature automatically uploads the last five Baldur’s Gate 3 saves to Larian’s servers, making it possible for Xbox gamers to recover them in case their local saves disappear.

Anyway, the Xbox system update Microsoft released yesterday should fix this game save bug for good. If you enjoy playing Baldur’s Gate 3 on your Xbox, you can update your console manually by going to Settings > System > Updates. The update will also be automatically installed on all Xbox consoles within the next week.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was one of the most critically acclaimed games of 2023, and it won the awards for Game of the Year and a couple of other awards at The Game Awards ceremony in December. The game’s release on Xbox was delayed last year due to Larian Studios needing more time to optimize the game for the less powerful Series S, but now that this save bug is gone, Xbox gamers can finally enjoy the Dungeons & Dragons-inspired RPG without worrying about losing their progress.
