Sony Has Reportedly Paused PS VR2 Production Due to Slowing Sales

Sony has reportedly put the production of its PS VR2 headset on pause to clear its existing inventory. Bloomberg is reporting today that Sony has manufactured over 2 million units of the PS5 accessory since its launch in February 2023, but sales are not going as strong as expected.

“Sales of the $550 wearable accessory to the PlayStation 5 have slowed progressively since its launch and stocks of the device are building up,” people familiar with the situation told Bloomberg. It doesn’t help that the headset costs a little bit more than a PS5 console in the US and that the current library of PS VR2 games is quite limited.

Sony sold five million units of its first PlayStation VR headset, which was priced at a more affordable $349. However, the new PS VR2 is not backwards compatible with original PS VR games, which may limit its appeal as VR enthusiasts wait for more PS VR2 games to be released.

Slowing PS VR2 sales may be why Sony recently announced that it’s exploring PC support for its new headset. The company said last month that it’s “currently testing the ability for PS VR2 players to access additional games on PC,” and the company will have more news to share later this year.
