The Forza racing game series will soon no longer be exclusive to Xbox consoles. Forza Motorsport 5, the latest installment in the sub-series of open-world racing games will hit PlayStation 5 consoles in Spring 2025.
The game was originally released on Xbox consoles and PC in November 2021, and with a 92 score on Metacritic, it’s still one of the most critically acclaimed Xbox exclusive games of this console generation. Forza Horizon games usually remain on sale for just four years due to expiring car and music licenses, but it looks like Microsoft judged that the latest episode could get a new lease on life thanks to PlayStation 5 gamers.
The Forza team confirmed today that the PS5 version of Forza Horizon 5 will get the same content as the Xbox and PC versions, including the Hot Wheels and Rally Adventure DLCs. Cross-play multiplayer will also be available for PS5 gamers.
“In addition to bringing Forza Horizon 5 to PS5, we’re working on a special new free content update for all platforms, Horizon Realms. Realms will give players the chance to explore a curated collection of some of the community’s favorite previously released Evolving Worlds, alongside some other surprises,” the Forza team announced today.
If Microsoft previously released Sea of Thieves, Hi-Fi Rush, Grounded, and Pentiment on the PlayStation 5, the Forza franchise is quite a different beast. The original Forza Motorsport game was released on the OG Xbox back in 2005, and over the years, Forza Motorsport became Xbox’s equivalent to PlayStation’s popular Gran Turismo franchise.
The Forza Horizon series, which has a more arcade gameplay, gave Xbox some of its most critically acclaimed games in recent years, with Forza Horizon 3, 4, and 5 all getting a 90+ score on Metacritic. While it’s true that Microsoft may have already sold all the Forza Horizon 5 copies it could sell to Xbox gamers in 2025, it does look like a core Xbox franchise like Forza losing its exclusive status paves the way for the release of Halo on PlayStation consoles.
